After sustaining a hit, Jamond Salley, a junior from Park View High School in South Hill, Viginia, was carried to the sideline. While medical officials began to administer care to Salley on the sideline he fell unconscious and started to suffer seizures.

Salley was transported to Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill; soon after, he was pronounced dead.

“Jamond was a strong student in both academics and as an athlete,” Mecklenburg County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. James Thornton said in a statement. “Members of his family, friends, and teachers have all shared one common trait of Jamond, he was very respectful. He was a student with a big heart and a smile that would instantly capture your attention.”

Salley is the fifth high school football player to die this year from an on-field collision, medical incident or suffering ill-effects duing a conditioning drill.
