Bill Cosby to Resign Role as Co-Chair of UMass-Amherst’s Capital Campaign
Published at(AMHERST, Mass.) — In the wake of renewed sexual assault allegations against him, Bill Cosby has agreed to resign his role as co-chair of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst’s capital campaign.
Cosby is an alumnus of the school’s College of Education, through which he received a master’s degree and a doctorate. UMass spokesperson Edward Blaguszewski issued a statement to ABC News, saying that Cosby “has agreed to resign as an honorary co-chair of UMass Amherst’s capital campaign. He no longer has any affiliation with the campaign nor does he serve in any other capacity for the university.”
The Boston Globe says that Cosby and his wife had donated to the school’s ongoing $300 million fundraising campaign.
A series of women have claimed to have been sexually abused by the 77-year-old comedian over the years. Earlier this month, Cosby’s attorney issued a statement in which he referred to the allegations as “decades-old” and “discredited.”
UMass is not the first organization to cut ties with Cosby. Last week, Netflix postponed the launch of a stand up comedy special. Cosby has never been charged in connection with the accusations.
