Although the terrorist organization did not claim responsibility for the attack, it has been blamed for previous bombings on at least 10 other schools in the town of Potiskum, located in a region of the country that the Nigerian military has almost no presence.

According to witnesses, the bomber was a man dressed as a student who carried a large bag into the morning assembly. It was when he was questioned about his bag that the assailant detonated the explosives inside.

The school itself has virtually no security so anyone could easily walk in and launch an assault.

Some reports said parents were so enraged following the bombing that killed upwards of 50 youngsters that they threw stones at soldiers who arrived later to inspect the carnage.

Boko Haram has frequently targeted schools that teach Western education. In its most publicized act this year, the group kidnapped nearly 300 girls from one school and allegedly married off more than 200 of them.
