“We have worked at this for a few months, but there was never any doubt in my mind that this would get done,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a statement. “Claude is one of the top coaches in the NHL and has consistently shown a passion for winning through his coaching.”

While the Bruins have never released the terms of Julien’s contract during his tenure, reports say the 54-year-old agreed to a three-year extension on Sunday morning. This is the third extension during his time in Boston, the second was just before the lockout-shortened season.

Julien is in his eighth season as Bruins coach, taking the team to seven straight playoff appearances. Boston has been to two Stanley Cup finals under Julien, winning the championship in 2011.

The Bruins are 317-171-65 since Julien took over prior to the 2007-08 season. Julien is the second-longest tenured coach in the National Hockey League behind Detroit’s Mike Babcock, who is in his 10th season.
