Professor Ian Cree from the University of Warwick and University Hospital in Coventry remarked, “A single blood-based screening test would be a game-changer for early detection of cancer, which could help make it a curable disease for many more patients.”

Conducted by the U.K. Early Cancer Detection Consortium, researchers found 800 possible signs of cancer in the blood that are called biomarkers.

This discovery may lead to a general screening test for various kinds of cancers, including rarer forms of the disease, in a less invasive fashion so that they can be treated earlier and possibly cured.

Cree says that the next step in the process is trying to discern which of the hundreds of biomarkers found “work the best for spotting cancers.”
