In a home-and-home series, the Islanders took a 5-4 shootout win in Pittsburgh Friday, then beat the Penguins in New York Saturday 4-1.  The Islanders are now tied with the Penguins in the Metro division at 28 points.

The Penguins took the lead late in the first on an Evgeni Malkin goal.  The Islanders matched it at 1:59 in the second when Matt Martin backhanded a rebound past Penguins goalie Thomas Greiss.

The third period opened and the Islanders came out firing. Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and John Tavares each scored a goal as New York blew open the game and sealed the victory.

“We’re understanding what’s bringing us success,” said Tavares. “We have a talented hockey club when everyone’s committed to doing the right things and doing their job.”
