(NEW YORK) — In the upcoming Annie remake, Jamie Foxx is transformed into Daddy Warbucks…well actually, Will Stacks.

The Oscar-winning actor, who stars opposite Quvenzhane Wallis as the title character in the film, says it was important for him to not only act as a father figure onscreen but offscreen as well.

“I wanted to be a real dad for Annie and Quvenzhane — no disrespect to her real father — so that within the piece we were shooting real moments,” he reveals in the December issue of Essence magazine.

Although Hollywood stars such as Cameron Diaz and Bobby Cannavale are also in the film, Foxx tells Essence the big screen adaption couldn’t have been revived without Wallis.

“I don’t think we could have done this movie unless Quvenzhane came along. It’s sort of like she’s tailor-made for the role in a sense,” he explained. “I would challenge you to find a girl who personifies Annie better than Quvenzhane does.”

Annie opens nationwide December 19.
