The brawl stemmed from late contact between the two drivers. Gordon, who entered the race third in the championship standings, was leading at the start of a green-white-checkered. Keselowski, who is no longer eligible for the Sprint Cup Championship, attempted to squeeze between Gordon and Johnson but made contact with Gordon’s car and cut his left rear tire, causing the number 24 car to spin out.

“The way he races, I don’t know how he ever won a championship. This is why everyone is fighting with him,” Gordon said. “There wasn’t any conversation. You can’t have a conversation with him. There’s big consequences. To me, it’s just a bunch of crap. The kid is just doing stuff way over his head.”

Gordon confronted Keselowski in pit row after the game and after some yelling and shoving, a melee between the drivers and their crews ensued with multiple punches being thrown. Keselowski’s lip was bleeding once order was restored while Gordon had a cut on his chin.

“We were just racing for the win. I didn’t wreck him and just raced him hard. He left a hole. Everything you watch in racing, you leave a hole, you’re supposed to go for it,” Keselowski said. “I don’t want to ruin anyone’s day. I wanted to win the race and that was the opportunity.”

Gordon finished 29th and fell to fourth in the points standings. Kevin Harvick finished second and was the highest finisher among championship contenders. He also played a roll in the fracas, giving Keselowski a shove before the fight began.

The Chase for the Sprint Cup turns to Phoenix where four of the eight remaining contenders will be eliminated. None of the current drivers have cemented their spot into the final round as Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin sit atop the standings. All eight drivers are separated by just 18 points with only six points between fourth and eighth place.
