SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Police say a Brigham Young University student was making methamphetamine in his apartment, but his attorney maintains the lab setup officers found was used to make soap.

Provo police say they started investigating after a fire started in 21-year-old Bryce Cazier’s room. His roommates picked the lock after he left the apartment and called police after noticing suspicious glassware and chemicals.

Authorities say agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration investigated for hours before charges were filed in the case.

But Cazier’s attorney says the BYU student makes his own soap and herbal extracts, and some chemicals used in herbal extraction are also used in meth production.

The Deseret News reports Cazier is being held on $50,000 bond.
