Lynch is the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn. If nominated and confirmed, she would be the nation’s first African American woman named to the post.

She has twice been confirmed by the Senate — in 2000 and again in 2010.

Lynch is an unusual choice by the White House: She is not part of the president’s inner circle. But that could give her an edge during confirmation hearings, by allowing her to avoid defending any previous administration policies in the new Republican-controlled Senate.

Top aides to three U.S. Senators had told ABC News they were informed this week by the White House that Lynch was the leading candidate. On Friday afternoon, the White House announced that Obama would declare his intention to nominate Lynch on Saturday.

Eric Schultz, a White House spokesman, had previously said no announcement on attorney general would happen until after the president returns from a trip to Asia on Nov. 16.
