Automobile manufacturers who produce 5,000 or more vehicles are required to submit early warning reports every quarter, including information on every incident that results in death or injury. Those reports are supposed to allege or prove that the death or injury was caused by possible defect.

NHTSA says that Honda’s failures to include that data in their reports is a violation of the TREAD Act. The agency is also concerned that the company may have failed to include such data in reports that go beyond the Takata air bags.

NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman said Monday that his agency’s “focus is keeping the American public and their vehicles safe.” Friedman noted that Honda and any other automakers’ failure to report information on such incidents “will not be tolerated.”
