According to the university, the Wednesday incident required a 911 response to a fraternity house at around midnight. That incident was the second in less than a week involving members of fraternity organizations. Both incidents are being investigated by both Morgantown police and University Police.

University President E. Gordon Gee offered his condolences on Friday, saying that “words cannot describe the heartache we, as a West Virginia University family, feel at the loss of one of our own — Nolan Michael Burch — who passed away today.”

Burch, 18, was a freshman from Williamsville, N.Y., the university said. He was majoring in pre-sport management.

“The outpouring of love and support from his friends and this community has been what you would expect from Mountaineers,” Gee said, “and I would ask that you continue to keep the Burch family and many friends in your thoughts and prayers.”
