According to the company’s website, 66,819 older-model pickup trucks are equipped with switches that contain a wire which may break, potentially preventing the vehicle from starting. In some cases, the company notes, “if recommended starting procedures are not followed,” the vehicle may “exhibit unintended movement when its ignition key is turned.”

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles says it is aware of one fatality linked to the problem, connected to the only known accident involving this problem with these vehicles.

The recall covers certain Dodge Dakota, Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500, and Mitsubishi Raider trucks produced between July 2005 and June 2006. About 54,558 of the recalled vehicles are in the U.S., with the majority of the remainder in Canada or Mexico.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will begin sending notices to affected customers in February. In the meantime, the company advises that recommended procedures are followed for starting vehicles, including activation of the parking brake, placing the shift lever in the neutral position and pressing the clutch prior to turning the ignition key.
