Newton told the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police that the other driver pulled in front of him as he was beginning to cross an intersection. Though Newton tried to swerve to avoid a crash, he was unable to stop from colliding.

Newton’s truck then flipped over and landed upside down.

The 25-year-old Carolina Panthers star was taken to a nearby hospital and was kept overnight for observation but released Wednesday morning.

Tests revealed he suffered two fractures in his lower back.

The transverse process bones that were fractured are connected to the spine, and though the injury can be painful and effect mobility it does not necessarily lead to long-term injury.

A spokesperson for the team told ABC News’ sister network ESPN that they do not yet know if Newton will be able to play this weekend.
