The win marks the fifth straight MLS Cup for the Galaxy as well as the final professional game of American soccer icon Landon Donovan.

After a scoreless first half, Los Angeles scored in the 52nd minute when Gyasi Zardes found the back of the net. Donovan had a chance to extend the lead a few moments later, but instead Keane kept possession and was unable to score again.

The Revolution were fortunate to find an equalizer in the 72nd minute as Patrick Mullins fed Chris Tierney, who buried the ball past Jaime Penedo. Tierney had another opportunity to put his team ahead in overtime but his left-footed shot was saved by Penedo.

That opened the door for Keane’s heroics.

It was the first Championship for the Galaxy since the 2012 season. Meanwhile, New England lost in the title game for the fifth time in franchise history.

Donovan ends his professional career as the leading scorer in US Men’s National Team history with 57 goals, along with owning the most goals in MLS history at 136. He is a four-time MLS Cup champion and national team Player of the Year, as well as earning the MLS Most Valuable Player award in 2009.
