London: Technical Failure Behind Major Delays at Airports

Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images(LONDON) — A “technical problem” at an air traffic control center more than 100 miles away from Heathrow has affected all London airports, including Heathrow.
A technical failure at Swanwick control center Friday, according to NATS, formerly the National Air Traffic Services, was behind the issue that temporarily grounded some planes at all London airports.
“NATS can confirm that a technical problem has been reported at Swanwick air traffic control center. We apologize for any delays and our incident response team has been mobilized. Every possible action is being taken to assist in resolving the situation and to confirm the details,” a statement from NATS read.
A later statement from Britain’s national air traffic body said the system had “been restored and we are in the process of returning to normal operations.”
