Merriam-Webster says it based its selections for the top 10 words of the year based on an uptick in lookups on its website compared to last year. As a result, the word of the year is “Culture.”

The word, whcih “allows us to identify and isolate an idea, issue or group,” topped the second place word, “nostalgia,” to be selected as the word of the year.

Insidious, legacy — linked to the retirement of New York Yankees star Derek Jeter — feminism, je ne sais quoi, innovation, surreptitious, autonomy and morbidity — linked in part to the spread of Ebola — rounded out Merriam-Webster’s list.
