Job growth far exceeded expectations, as economists had previously projected that only about 230,000 jobs would be created last month.

The latest data released Friday from the U.S. Department of Labor shows the national unemployment rate continues to hold at 5.8 percent, with retail, health care, manufacturing and business services leading last month’s job growth.

Despite the latest addition of jobs, the number of long-term unemployed — those without work for 27 weeks or more — changed little at 2.8 million in November, the Labor Department reported.

October and September employment numbers were also revised higher to show an extra 44,000 jobs were added in those months.
