NYC Prison Guard Charged in Connection with Inmate’s Death

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1418092913289Darrin Klimek/Digital Vision/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — A guard at the New York City prison on Rikers Island faces multiple criminal charges after he allegedly failed to inspect the cells of inmates he was in charge of in a case linked to the death of one of those inmates.

Jerome Murdough, an inmate at Rikers Island, died in February in a cell where the heat was turned up to 101 degrees. A medical examiner ruled that Murdough’s death was caused by hyperthermia due to environmental exposure to heat.

The correctional officer, Carol Lackner, could face up to four years in prison after being charged with falsifying business records in the first degree, falsifying business records in the second degree, offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, offering a false instrument for filing in the second degree, and official misconduct.
