The Panthers (7-8-1) become the first team since 2010 to make the playoffs with a losing record.

“The beautiful thing — record doesn’t matter,” Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said. “That’s the best part.”

The Panthers hurried Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan throughout the game, pressuring him on 21 of his passes and sacking him six times.

The Falcons (6-10) would have made the playoffs with a win but couldn’t get anything going offensively.  Star receiver Julio Jones only had four catches for 58 yards.

Carolina returns to the playoffs for the second straight season and improves its record in December to 15-3 under coach Rivera.
