Texan’s defensive end Jadeveon Clowney underwent microfracture knee surgery Monday, according to a statement from the Houston Texans.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the recovery time for Clowney will be around nine months.  His return will likely be after the 2015 pre-season.

It is possible he could start the season on the team’s physically unable to perform list.

“We expect a full recovery,” Texans general manager Rick Smith told ESPN.com’s Tania Ganguli.

Clowney entered the league with enormous attention and promise for his ability to rush the passer. Since being drafted, his season has been injury-plagued. He suffered a concussion in an August practice with Denver. He then suffered a lateral meniscus tear in the season opener against the Washington Redskins.

“This guy’s a football player. He wants to play football, he wants to be good. He was disappointed,” Head Coach Bill O’Brien said via Twitter.
