The winds lashed the coastline, bending trees, and knocking down powerlines.

Holly Frew, in Manila with the group CARE, noted seeing, “Lots of downed power lines, no electricity, fallen trees, damage to some of the houses. There’s some houses that’ve been washed out along with coastal areas, and significant flooding.”

Frew says aid workers are having a hard time reaching communities that were the first to be hit by the storm.

“The Philippines is an archipelago of islands which in times of disaster, like these kinds of storms, access to the people can be very difficult,” Frew said.

It was a little over a year ago that Typhoon Haiyan flattened parts of the Philippines, killing thousands.
