SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) – A northern Idaho middle school went into lockdown after a student in a different building accidentally activated the alarm while making a phone call from a school landline.

The student made a call at Washington Elementary School on Monday, but neglected to press the digit needed to connect to an outside line. Instead, the student dialed the same number as the code that remotely sends Sandpoint Middle School into lockdown and alerts multiple law enforcement agencies.

Sandpoint Police Chief Corey Coon tells the Bonner County Daily Bee that the call also prevented anyone from getting into the neighboring high school.

Law officers swept the middle school while students and staff sheltered in place.

A school official says the phone system is being changed to prevent a similar event.
