The hockey stick made in the 1830s originally showed up on eBay, which created a stir in the place where hockey is as much of Canada’s national identity as maple syrup and the Canadian Mounties.

It was called a national treasure, and there were demands that it not be allowed to leave the country.

That’s when the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, stepped in and bought it from Mark Presley.

“It’s my dream come true for a fellow like most Canadians who loves that game but has a real fascination with history,” said Presley.

Researchers say the stick was made from a piece of sugar maple and was carved by William Moffat in Nova Scotia, who lived not far from where the game is said to have been invented.

The museum is going to put it on display beginning July 1st, 2017 — the 150th anniversary of the Canadian state.
