Alex Ovechkin scored his 18th goal of the season in the win.

“We start talking about Winter Classic since we started the season, and this is it,” Ovechkin said. “I remember Brouwie said it’s a good time to show up and make a show. And he did.”

The Capitals (19-11-7, 45 pts) raced to a 2-0 lead halfway through the first period when Ovechkin knocked in a rebound.

The Blackhawks (25-11-2, 52 pts) fought back and tied the game in the second period, when Brandon Saad scored on a pass from Jonathan Toews.

Nationals Park had a turnout of 42,832 people to watch the seventh Winter Classic.
