That was Ellen DeGeneres’ reaction Friday when the news came that the Supreme Court will take up the issue of same-sex marriage in the upcoming term.

At the time, she was onstage at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour, promoting the new NBC sitcom One Big Happy, which she’s executive producing.

The talk show host went on to compare the issue to the civil rights movement.

“I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie Selma,” she said, “But the thing that changed the civil rights movement is when white people got involved and starting marching.  Because until then it was nothing but violence and disaster and it continued to be for a while. But, we need everyone on the same side, we’re kind of trying to do this march, and we just need people that believe in equality.”

Ellen believes that once everyone, both gay and straight, agrees that same-sex marriage is important, it’ll go a long way towards the fight.

“If we have people that will join us, and give us that which is only fair — to have the same rights that everybody else has — then it’s a wonderful world,” she told reporters.
