Freezing Rain Storm Hits Northeast
Published at(NEW YORK) — A storm, and the freezing rain it brought with it, has left much of the northeast frozen with transportation slowdowns and dangerous conditions.
At least 27 vehicles were involved in a collision on Interstate 76 near Philadelphia Sunday morning. All lanes of the roadway were closed. Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that there were injuries in the collision, but could not provide specific details.
The Delaware River Port Authority announced closures of all four bridges they operate. The DRPA blamed flash icing and said that crews were out to re-apply salt.
Dave Buck of the Maryland State Highway Administration said that because no advance warning of the possibility of icy road conditions was given by the National Weather Service, proper preparations couldn’t have been taken.
New Jersey State Police said that they had responded to over 400 accidents between midnight and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

New Jersey Transit had suspended operations on bus lines in the northern part of the state.
In New York, the eastbound Long Island Expressway was closed near the Queens Midtown Tunnel and the New York State Throughway was closed southbound from Newburgh to New York City. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended all bus operations in the Bronx.
