The company reported Wednesday that it sold 9,924,880 vehicles around the world in 2014 — a 2 percent increase from the record set the previous year.

“GM is making solid progress and has good momentum. Our customer focus, the new cars, trucks and crossovers we launched in China and North America, technologies like OnStar with 4GLTE and the revitalization underway at Opel helped us achieve another record year, despite very challenging market conditions in different parts of the world,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement.

One of the challenges the automaker faced last year was historic recalls. More than 30 million GM vehicles were recalled for ignition defects linked to multiple deaths. Legal compensation regarding those recalls topped $2 billion.

Despite the setbacks, GM’s sales increase thrust the company into the top three of all manufacturers for the year, trailing just Toyota and Volkswagen.
