The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 259.70 to a close of 17,813.98.

The Nasdaq closed the session at 4,750.40, up 82.98 from open, while the S&P climbed 31.03 to 2,063.15.

The U.S. Labor Department said Thursday that first-time jobless claims were at 307,000, down 10,000 from last week. The four-week moving average, however, climbed 6,500 from last week to 306,500.

Also on Thursday, shareholders of the Family Dollar company approved a sale to Dollar Tree. That deal had been in the work for months. Dollar Tree’s CEO said in a statement that the company will now operate over 13,000 stores in 48 states and five Canadian provinces totaling more than $18 billion in annual sales.
