With a 42-20 victory over the Oregon Ducks on Monday, Urban Meyer’s team completed their Cinderella run.

In the inaugural college football playoff, few expected the No. 40seeded Buckeyes to contend — they didn’t make the playoff until the final week of the season with a 59-0 demoliton of the Wisconsin Badgers.  After the win they took the place of TCU.

Perhaps even more impressive was their final three games, in which they had to rely on a third-string sophomore at quarterback in Cardale Jones. He was efficient against the Ducks, completing 16 of 23 passes for 242 yards and one touchdown. Jones also plunged in from one yard out to give the Buckeyes a 21-7 lead in the second quarter.

Running back Ezekiel Elliot brought his lunch pail and an extra hard hat to the game. He carried the ball 36 time for 246 yards and four touchdowns as he carved through the Ducks’ defense.

The Oregon Ducks’ Heisman-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota tried valiantly to keep his team in the game as he racked up 333 yards passing and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to contend with the brute force of Ohio State.

This is Ohio State’s eighth national championship and first since 2002.
