Around 20 vehicles were involved in the crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 around 5 a.m., according to Oregon State Police and Oregon Department of Transportation officials.

State Police Sergeant Kyle Hove said four people were hurt in the Saturday morning crash, east of Baker City.

“A bunch of trucks that traveled upon a sheet of black ice lost control and jackknifed, causing about 20 vehicles to collide and essentially trapping 50 vehicles in that crash zone,” Hove told ABC News.

Hazmat crews responded to the crash scene, but according to Hove, state officials believe at this point other than diesel, there is no hazardous material in the trucks involved in the crash.

The highway’s eastbound lanes were closed after the accident and were expected to remain closed throughout Saturday. Westbound lanes were later shut to help emergency responders at the scene, according to ODOT.

The agency is asking travelers to take alternate routes to bypass the closure area in eastern Oregon.
