“Birdman” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Lead Oscar Nominees

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1421322687571ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty Image(LOS ANGELES) — Birdman: The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance and The Grand Budapest Hotel are the leading nominees for the 87th annual Academy Awards. The two films picked up nine nominations each Thursday morning.  The next most-nominated film is The Imitation Game, with eight.

Star Trek actor Chris Pine, Star Trek and Star Wars director J.J. Abrams, and Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón joined Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs in announcing the Oscar nominees Thursday morning at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Eight films in all will compete for the Best Picture award: American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything, and Whiplash. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences could have nominated 10 films in the category.

The Best Director nominees are Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Birdman; Richard Linklater, for Boyhood; Bennett Miller, for Foxcatcher; Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel; and Morten Tyldum, for The Imitation Game.  Notably absent from that list is Selma director Ava Duvernay, who would’ve made history by becoming the first black woman nominated in the category.

Best Actor nominees are Michael Keaton, for Birdman; Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything; Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game; Steve Carrell, Foxcatcher; and Bradley Cooper, American Sniper.

In the Best Actress category, the nominees are Reese Witherspoon, for Wild; Julianne Moore, Still Alice; Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything; Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night; and Rosamund Pike, for Gone Girl.

In the Best Original Song category, the nominees include “Everything Is Awesome,” from The Lego Movie; “Glory,” from Selma;“Grateful,” from Beyond the Lights; “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” from I’ll Be Me; and“Lost Stars,” from Begin Again.
