BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Idaho lawmakers overall agree that the state’s aging roads and bridges must be upgraded, but Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s new budget proposal includes no additional funding for transportation maintenance efforts.

That means it’ll be solely up to legislatures to find a plan to increase funding that does not compete with education funding.

However, Otter did urge lawmakers to find a solution during his ninth State of the State address on Monday, describing the issue as the elephant in the room.

Little to no consensus has yet to be outlined on how to best fund the maintenance efforts but one possible option is raising the gas tax or increasing vehicle registration fees.
