“The Big Bang Theory,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Maleficent” Winners at People’s Choice Awards

Sonja Flemming/CBS(LOS ANGELES) — The Big Bang Theory won the top TV prize Wednesday night at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles.
The CBS sitcom was voted Favorite TV Show and Favorite Network TV Comedy. Its lead female star, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, was named Favorite Comedic TV Actress. She forgot to thank her husband while accepting that honor, but her co-star Johnny Galecki made sure to acknowledge him later on, when the cast and crew took the stage for the Favorite TV Show award.
ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy earned several awards, including Favorite Network TV Drama, Favorite Dramatic TV Actor for Patrick Dempsey, and Favorite Dramatic TV Actress for Ellen Pompeo.
Another ABC star, How to Get Away with Murder’s Viola Davis, was voted Favorite Actress In A New TV Series. During her acceptance speech, she referenced the controversy over a 2014 New York Times article that described her as “less classically beautiful” than lighter-skinned African-American actresses such as Kerry Washington or Halle Berry.
Davis thanked her show’s creator and executive producers for “thinking of a lady that looks like my classic beauty.”
Betty White had the audience laughing with a joke she made while accepting the award for Favorite TV Icon. Addressing Melissa McCarthy’s win earlier in the evening for Favorite Comedic Movie Actress, the 92-year-old White quipped, “She said she’d stay with us as long as you’d let her. Well, you’ve abused the privilege with me.”
Maleficent was among the big winners in the film categories, earning the titles of Favorite Movie and Favorite Family Movie. Divergent also picked up multiple honors.

Ben Affleck was on hand to accept the Favorite Humanitarian award in recognition of his work with the Eastern Congo Initiative, which helps increase the quality and quantity of investments in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The two-hour ceremony aired on CBS and was hosted by Mom co-stars Anna Faris and Allison Janney. The show began with a sketch that featured Faris; her husband, Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt; and Janney, which poked fun at Pratt’s blossoming movie career.
The broadcast featured musical performances by Iggy Azalea, Fall Out Boy and Lady Antebellum.
