Strong winds were expected to continue on Monday, reducing visibility, creating drifts and complicating an ongoing cleanup effort.

Temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast fell below zero, including minus -26 degrees in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Heavy snow and ice was expected in the south-central United States from eastern Kansas to the Mid-Atlantic coast. The wintry mix already produced treacherous travel conditions in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Snow was expected late Monday in cities such as St. Louis, Cincinnati, Washington, Philadelphia, New York City and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said on Monday that the city has received more than 7.5 feet of snow since Jan. 23. Besides the snow, Walsh said on Monday he is also concerned about subzero temperatures.

“We’ve housed about 500 homeless folks that have been on a consistent basis and probably over the last three weeks for the most part. And tonight we’re open again to try and get as many homeless people, anyone that’s on the street off the street, because of the bitter cold we have here in the city of Boston,” he said.

While it is already the snowiest February in the history of Boston, the city is possibly expecting 3 to 4 more inches of snow to fall on Tuesday.

An even colder air mass lurks behind the next storm system, with record lows possible in the coming days.
