Blues Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk to Undergo Abdominal Surgery
Published at(NEW YORK) — In the midst of having a career-season, St. Louis Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk will be out indefinitely after needing to undergo abdominal surgery.
Shattenkirk suffered the injury when he collided with Washington Capital Alex Ovechkin in the first period of Sunday’s game.
The Blues announced that Shattenkirk will have the procedure in the next seven to 10 days. It is unknown just how long he’ll be out of action.
Now in his fifth NHL season, Shattenkirk has been one of the best scoring defenseman in the NHL this season. In 49 games, he has 40 points, second-most by an NHL defenseman this season. He also leads defenseman in assists with 32.
With 68 points, the Blues are third in the Western Conference. They trail the Nashville Preadators and Anaheim Ducks by two points for the top spot.
