The Celtics general manager Danny Ainge targeted Thomas when the guard was a free agent over the summer, before the Suns signed him. Phoenix ended up giving Thomas a 4-year, $27 million contract that is worth less money each season.

The 5-foot-9, 26-year-old Thomas is averaging 25.7 minutes, 15.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this season.

Meanwhile, the Celtics send Thornton and his $8.575 million expiring contract to Phoenix.

The 27-year-old Thornton is averaging 16.4 minutes and 8.9 points per game this season while shooting 42% from 3-point range.
