While financial details have not been officially released, it is believed Shields’ deal is worth around $75 million over four years, and also includes a fifth-year option.

The 33-year-old Shields is one of the more durable workhorse starting pitchers in baseball. According to Baseball Reference, Shields ranks first among MLB pitchers with 1,785 2/3 innings pitched since 2007.

This past season with the Kansas City Royals, “Big Game James” went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA while pitching 227.0 innings pitched.

Shields has pitched more than 200 innings in every season since 2007.

Shields is the latest addition to the Padres as they’ve remade their team this offseason. Along with Shields, they’ve added Wil Myers, Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, Derek Norris, and Will Middlebrooks.
