According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall is an expansion of a previous recall related to Cheverolt Malibu, Malibu Maxx and Pontiac G6 vehicles from the 2006 and 2007 model years. These vehicles, the NHTSA says, “may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist.” The issue, caused by minor damage to an electrical terminal during assembly insertion, could happen at any time.

The agency notes that if power steering assist is lost, steering control would be maintained, but “would require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds.” The issue could increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will be advised to replace the assembly and reimburse owners for repairs.
