Prosecutors say Craig Hicks, 46, shot dead second-year dentistry student Deah Barakat, his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, and her sister, Razan Abu-Salha, at an apartment complex near the University of North Carolina.

The victims ranged in ages from 19 to 23.

Although a long-standing dispute over a parking space was described as the primary motive, relatives of the victims maintain it was a hate crime, given Hicks’ Facebook postings against all organized religions.  The FBI has since begun an inquiry into the shootings.

While Hicks waits to be represented by counsel, Karen Hicks, his wife of seven years, has reportedly filed for divorce.
