It was the Oilers (15-30-9, 39 pts) who turned up the heat however, as they extinguished the Devils 2-1.

The Devils (21-24-9, 51 pts) began the night honoring Patrik Elias for scoring his 1,000th career point — achieved last month against Buffalo.

Elias promptly put the Devils ahead when he crushed the puck over the glove side shoulder of Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens 5:47 into the first period.

The team would hold the lead until the Oilers’ Oscar Klefborn beat Cory Schneider with under a minute to go in the first. Nail Yakupov would seize the lead for Edmonton in the second on a power play goal.

“We all have to look ourselves in the mirror and I need to find a way to be one better,” Schneider said. “That’s our recipe for success — keep it at one or two — tonight I couldn’t come up with that one save we needed and we weren’t able to pull this one out of the fire.”

General manager Lou Lamoriello wouldn’t put any of the blame on Schneider’s shoulders, instead blaming the energy of the team on the ice and the inconsistency shooting on scoring chances.

“Cory has been that way consistently, each and every night,” Lamoriello said. “Goaltending is not the issue.”

With two tough games coming up for the Devils in Chicago and Nashville, it’s now or never for their season.
