Host Neil Patrick Harris, for his first look of the evening, bucked tradition and chose a grey Brunello Cucinelli tuxedo for the red carpet.

The leading ladies on this year’s Oscars red carpet shone in whites this year, with Felicity Jones, Lupita N’Yongo, Julianne Moore, Kerry Washington and Marion Cotillard all opting for that color…or absence thereof. While Jones opted for an Alexander McQueen dress, N’Yongo wore a custom Calvin Klein collection dress that reportedly featured over 6,000 pearls. Moore donned a custom Chanel dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld, Washington wore Miu Miu, and Cottillard’s Dior couture gown featured a long bustle.

And the award for the biggest “What is she wearing?” moment undoubtedly went to presenter Jennifer Lopez, who stunned in a flesh-toned, cleavage-baring Elie Saab ball gown.  It looked very similar to a bubblegum pink sparkling ball gown worn by Robert Duvall’s wife, Luciana Pedraza.

As for the hairdos, Faith Hill and Scarlett Johansson both made statements on the red carpet with short pixie cuts. Selma director Ava Duvernay swept her dreadlocks into an ornate updo for the formal occasion. J-Lo didn’t want to take away from her gown and opted for a simple pony tail, as did Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson.

Here’s a breakdown of what all the stars wore:

Lady Gaga followed the white trend, wearing a custom Azzedine Alaïa gown with red-winged elbow-length gloves and red detailing in her hair. It was a fashion “wow” moment as no one has ever worn an Azzedine Alaïa gown on an Oscars red carpet. The gown took two months to create.

Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon, a nominee this year for Wild, wore a black and white off-the-shoulder Tom Ford dress. She completed her look with simple chic hair, a diamond bracelet and diamond drop earrings.

Oscar nominee Patricia Arquette chose a black and white one-shoulder gown with a sweeping neckline. It was designed by her childhood best friend, Rosetta Getty.

Gone Girl star and nominee Rosamund Pike perfectly matched the red carpet in a red Givenchy Haute Couture sculpted gown. She paired the strapless number with ruby heels and simple stud earrings.

Newcomer Gina Rodriguez disappointed in a teal, flowy Suzy Amis Cameron gown. It was definitely a downgrade from her black strapless dress at the Golden Globe Awards, where she won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Jane the Virgin. Still, the dress had an interesting story: it was eco-friendly, made of 100 percent certified organic silk.

America Ferrera looked stunning in a teal Jenny Packham gown, paired perfectly with an infinity-shaped belt, and complete with matching teal drop earrings.

Into the Woods star Anna Kendrick, who performed during Neil Patrick Harris’ opening number, stunned in a custom peach Thakoon floor-length gown. The dress didn’t need much accessorizing, since it came with its own diamond choker.

New mother of twins Zoe Saldana went a bit more romantic with a blush Atelier Versace gown. Unlike many stars who try to get their baby weight off, Saldana chose the perfect dress to compliment her changing figure.

Cate Blanchett looked classic in a black John Galliano for Maison Margiela gown, but it was her turquoise and diamond Tiffany necklace that really completed her look.

Dakota Johnson looked red hot in a red one-shoulder Yves Saint Laurent gown with diamond details. She completed her look by wearing over two million dollars’ worth of Forevermark diamonds.  And no, she wasn’t wearing handcuffs.

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts wore a wine-colored cap-sleeved gown, with Jimmy Choo pumps, jewelry by David Yurman and Hueb, and a clutch by Judith Leiber.

As for the men:

Oscar winner J. K. Simmons pulled a Pharrell Williams and wore a hat on the red carpet. His black top hat made a statement, but probably will land the Whiplash actor on the Worst Dressed List.

Oscar nominee Common paired his classic navy blue Prada tuxedo with a white Prada bow tie. Following the navy color trend, Eddie Redmayne and Ansel Elgort matched, as they both wore navy and black blazers with matching black bow ties.

David Oyewelo got mixed reviews in his wine-colored Dolce and Gabbana tuxedo with matching bow tie, complete with a matching red vest. He was definitely the most daring man on the red carpet.
