The head coach of the runner up for the National Championship will almost double his salary from $1.8 million per year to $3.5 million per year. He can also earn incentives for winning a National title as well as reaching GPA thresholds for his players.

Helfrich is 24-4 in two seasons as the Ducks head coach after taking over for Chip Kelly, who took the head job with the Philadelphia Eagles. With his new contract, Helfrich will make roughly the same amount that Kelly made in his final years as the Ducks head coach.

Under Helfrich’s leadership, the university saw Marcus Mariota flourish, throwing for 4,454 yards and 42 touchdowns, as well as earning the school’s first Heisman Trophy.

Helfrich, 41, began his coaching career at Oregon under Mike Bellotti as a graduate assistant. He then served as quarterbacks coach for Boise State (1998-2000) and Arizona State (2001-2005) until becoming offensive coordinator at Colorado through 2009, where he then took the same position with Oregon under Kelly.
