San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer met with San Diego Chargers team president Dean Spanos and agreed to expedite a timetable with the county stadium advisory panel, to find a new location and finance plan for the stadium.

“I explained to Mr. Spanos that we are going to work to keep the team here but I will never support a deal that San Diego can’t afford,” Faulconer said in a prepared statement. “We will continue to work to produce a viable stadium plan that is fair for San Diegans, protects taxpayers and can be approved by voters.

“The stadium advisory group has agreed to speed up its efforts and will release a work product in the next 90 days. I look forward to sharing the plan with the public and the Chargers at that time.”

In 2013, USA Today found that oftentimes tax payers end up paying more than half the costs of new stadiums. During construction and improvements, the public takes on almost 75% of the bill due to “obscure costs.”

The advisory panel was originally scheduled to put forth a proposal in September, but as the Chargers continue to explore options in the Los Angeles market to put pressure on San Diego, Faulconer agreed to speed up the process.
