Botticelli doesn’t have a traditional history expected of the man tasked with leading the administration’s drug policy: Botticelli has been a recovering alcoholic for nearly a quarter century, an experience he insists gives him a unique perspective in addressing substance abuse problems.

His struggles were profiled last summer in The Washington Post.

Botticelli has served as acting director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy since March.
