Silva, who is widely considered the best mixed martial arts fighter ever, tested positive for two anabolic steroids, drostanolone and androstane. The test was administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission as a random out-of-competition screening.

In an interesting note, his most recent opponent Nick Diaz also failed a drug test, after marijuana metabolites were found in his system.

The former UFC middleweight champion Silva failed a test that was conducted on January 9, but was allowed to compete because the results were not returned until Tuesday.

The fight against Diaz was Silva’s first fight after a 13-month recovery from an in-ring broken leg. Silva won by unanimous decision.

The UFC released a statement after the positive test:

“On Feb. 3, 2015, the UFC organization was notified by the NSAC that Anderson Silva tested positive for drostanolone metabolites on his Jan. 9 out of competition drug test. UFC’s understanding is that further testing will be conducted by the commission to confirm these preliminary results.

“Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC, in Brazil as well as around the world. UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results.”

This was Diaz’s third positive test for marijuana.
