Researchers from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business say that in a series of experiences, hypothetical employers and recruiters came away more impressed with an applicant’s qualifications when they heard the pitch.

Although they listened to audio from a video, they weren’t as impressed with the visual aspect of the tape as what was spoken, rating an applicant more competent, thoughtful and intelligent than by just reading a resume.

Professor Nicholas Epley, one of the study authors, remarked, “A person’s speech conveys their fundamental capacity to think — the capacity for reasoning, thoughtfulness and intellect.”

Epley and Ph.D. candidate Juliana Schroeder had Chicago Booth MBA student job candidates present written and video pitches to job evaluators. In addition to giving candidates they could listen to higher marks, the evaluators said they’d be more apt to hire them as well.
