BYUI announces commencement speaker

REXBURG ­— Elder Robert C. Gay, a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will address 1,937 graduates at Brigham Young University-Idaho’s winter commencement on Friday, April 10. The event will be held at 5:45 p.m. in the BYU-Idaho Center.

The university will award 545 associate degrees and 1,430 bachelor’s degrees. Of the graduates, 1,125 are females and 812 are males. About 49 percent have served as missionaries for the Church.

Elder Gay was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy in April 2012. He has served the Church in numerous capacities, including as a full-time missionary in Spain, ward mission leader, high priest group leader, gospel doctrine teacher, ward Young Men president, high councilor, bishopric counselor, and mission president.

He received a bachelor’s degree in economics and statistics from the University of Utah and a doctorate in business economics from Harvard University. He has worked in financial services and business consulting and was an economics instructor at Harvard University. He and his wife, Lynette, are the parents of seven children.

Accompanying Elder Gay at BYU-Idaho’s winter commencement will be Elder Paul V. Johnson, commissioner of the Church Educational System and member of the First Quorum of the Seventy.
