Comedy Central Supports New “Daily Show” Host Trevor Noah After Backlash
Published at(NEW YORK) — Comedy Central said they stand by Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart’s successor on The Daily Show, after the South African comedian came under fire for some controversial comments he’d tweeted in the past.
The tweets have caused some to accuse Noah of being anti-Semitic and sexist. One tweet from 2011, for example, reads, “A hot white woman with a** is like a unicorn. Even if you do see one, you’ll probably never get to ride it.” Others contain comments about Jews and Israel, which were perceived to be derogatory.
But in a statement provided to ABC Radio Monday, the cable network said, “Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
Noah has also received support from fellow comedians, including Chris Rock. When the news first broke about Noah replacing Stewart, he tweeted: “Thank you President Obama.”
