Judge Terrence Berg was shot outside his Detroit residence on Thursday night. Two suspects approached him and one shot him in the leg. The FBI Violent Crime Task Force is investigating the shooting, with help from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Detroit Police Department.

Witnesses described the suspects as black males between 18 and 25 years old. Berg was treated for his injuries at a local hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the incident may have been an attempted robbery, potentially unrelated to Berg’s position as a judge.

Anita Sevier, Berg’s wife, released a statement on Friday, sharing the new that surgery to stabilize Judge Berg “was successful and he is doing well.” Berg, who will require additional surgery, is currently in good condition, her statement said.

“While this was a horrible incident that happened in Detroit, I don’t want it used as a reason to hate the City,” she wrote. “Instead, we need to do something positive for the youth to help show them that there are better path to take. I strongly recommend people be part of the solution.”
